A small group of 11 photographs documenting early Pride Marches in New York City, including the first ever in 1970.
A selection of dynamic documentarian images of early Pride Marches, apparently including the first organized, held on June 28, 1970, the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. The photographs include marchers, signs, and acts of celebration and protest. One shows members of Lavender Menace, a group of lesbian radical feminists formed to protest the exclusion of lesbians and their issues from the feminist movement at the Second Congress to Unite Women in New York City on May 1, 1970. This image possibly includes Martha Shelley, an activist and writer. Silver prints, the images measuring 219x155 mm; 8 5/8x6 1/8 inches, and slightly smaller, and the reverse, the sheets 254x203 mm; 10x8 inches, three with the date 6/27/71 and one the date 6/28/70 in pencil on verso. Circa 1970-1971.
