[Pair of 18th-century Ptolemaic and Copernican armillary spheres.] Ptolemaic - Central 2 1/2-inch terrestrial globe comprised of 12 hand-colored engraved gores with orbiting Sun and Moon discs on brass arms, hand-colored engraved calibration rings pasted to equatorial, ecliptic and Zodiac bands; appropriate restorations; later turned wooden base and baluster. Copernican - Central gilt wooden sun ball banded to a 3/4-inch terrestrial globe with moon disc surrounded by rings of the Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and bands representing the Solstice and Equinox; appropriate restorations; turned wooden base and baluster.
