(GOLD MINING)
Quarter-plate daguerreotpye of seven placer miners at work in Northern California, posed for the camera around a "long tom" (used for separating dirt from gold); in a leather case; separated at hinge. Early 1850s

Additional Details

This outdoor scene shows placer mining, which required that ore be manually separated from the rock. The technique was mostly used in gold mining in the early 1850s, before the advent of hydraulic mining in 1854. This image was featured in Ken Burns's PBS film "The West" (1996).
