(GOLDMAN, EMMA)
A pair of mugshots of Emma Goldman, Russian American anarcho-feminist. Silver prints, 2 3/4x2 inches (7x5 cm.), on an original mount, and mounted again to a later card, which measures 7 7/8x5 5/8 inches (20x14.3 cm.), with an identifying caption, in ink, on the later mount recto, and with various labels, stamps, and notations, in pencil, on that mount verso. Circa 1901

Additional Details

Originally from the Jay Culver Family Collection.

Goldman was a prominent leader of the American Anarchist movement. These mug shots were apparently taken in 1901, when Goldman was arrested in (rather tenuous) connection to the assassination of William McKinley. She was arrested a number of times for various offenses, including giving lessons to the public on the correct use of contraceptives, and producing propaganda opposing conscription in the United States during World War I. She was deported during the "Red Scare" of 1919-20.
