first edition, variant issue with engraved title page replacing the typeset one--most copies are titled "Historia general de las Indias Ocidentales. . ." An important early history of Guatemala and the neighboring Chiapas region of Mexico. Remesal was a Dominican friar who came from the Philippines to Guatemala in 1614. Sympathetic to the Indians, he included a sympathetic account of Las Casas. When his history arrived in Guatemala from Spain, all copies were seized and he was placed before the Inquisition for defaming the conquistadores. Though released, he was forced to leave the Domincan order.
