Additional Details

First edition of a history of Haiti and Santo Domingo by a British army officer, based in part on his personal experiences. He was convicted of spying by the revolutionary government in 1799 and sentenced to death, but was personally pardoned by Toussaint Louverture, who he describes as "a truly great man" (page 249). The French come off in a less flattering light. Palau 246395; Sabin 67531 (calls for only 10 plates).
