Christopher Tompkins (1778-1838) was a ship captain from Mathews County, VA. These papers relate to his trade with Haiti under the rule of Toussaint Louverture in two schooners, the Lively and Dart. They include invoices and bills of lading for cargoes such as coffee, logwood, pork, handkerchiefs, and spermaceti candles, including documents in both French and English. Also included are 2 letters to Tompkins containing orders from the ship's owner Alexander Wilson, 21 November 1800 and 16 May 1801; a notice in French and English for the sale of the Lively in Haiti, 29 January [1801]; and a crew list for the Dart, May 1801. with--a copy book of outgoing correspondence kept by Tompkins as a ship captain from February 1802 to April 1803, mostly from European ports.
