(HAMBURG-AMERICAN LINE.) "Vaterland." Hob nail iron cross. Curious hob nail cross in the form of an award metal, created to aid German war victims during World War I by a seaman on the ship, 25x20 1/2 inches overall; velvet a bit worn.

Additional Details

Accompanied by a 3-page Typed Summary by Braynard explaining the story of the cross and how he came to acquire it. Apparently a seaman on the ship created the cross and then sold hob nails for one German mark or one American dollar to people interested in German war aid. The purchaser of the nail could then hammer it into the cross. In the center of the cross is the letter "W" for Kaiser Wilhelm. The dates 1914, 1915, and 1916 represent the three years the liner had sat idle.
