(HAMBURG-AMERICAN LINE.) "Vaterland." Rail ornament from the deck of the ship, being an elliptical ornament made from lignum vitae wood, bearing the initial "GDV" within a stylized rope border, 6x4 1/4 inches, on a mount made from the ship's rail. Accompanied by a photocopy of a recollection written by Braynard in which he mentions the piece and how he acquired it. Nd

Additional Details

Rather an odd survival. The wood of the lignum vitae tree was widely used on blocks and tackle because of its extreme denseness. It is so heavy that it actually sinks when immersed in water. This ornament bears the initials "GDV" (Grosse Dampfer Vaterland).
