Additional Details

The 17 July issue offers a brief first report of Hamilton's death on the issue's 7th page, apparently added just as they were going to press. It is laid out between mourning bars below a somber tombstone woodcut. It notes that "the gentlemen of the bar, who were attending the Circuit at Claverack . . . unanimously agreed to wear a crape on the left arm for one month, as a token of their regard for Gen. Hamilton." The next week's issue offers 4 pages of tributes and the correspondence of Burr and Hamilton. The 31 July issue includes Hamilton's will and the oration delivered at his funeral.
