Additional Details

The Rev. James Bicknell (1829-1892) was born into a missionary family and spent his entire life in the Pacific; he was a missionary with the Hawaii Evangelical Association from 1867 until his death. Here he describes the covert survival and practice of native Hawaiian religion since the first missionaries arrived in 1820, a practice he was devoted to stamping out: "When the land is purged of idolatry, the churches will then be able to take care of themselves. . . . With clean hearts to move upon and mold, the Holy Spirit can make Hawaiian as valiant for the faith as either Americans or Englishmen." Forbes 4125 (cf 4194); none others traced at auction.
