Additional Details

An important Hawaiian missionary and temperance journal, full of local detail. In the May issue, Damon states that "The publication of the Friend will be discontinued . . . until the editor returns from a voyage to the Western Coast of America." The last seven issues, resumed in September, include the first printing of Damon's serially published "A Trip from the Sandwich Islands to Lower Oregon, and Upper California," preceded by its own separate title page. This narrative was also issued as a separate volume, and is rarely seen in the context of the full year's issues. "The author's vivid descriptions cover Northwest United States from the Columbia River to San Francisco"--Graff 994. Cowan 1914 page 61; Forbes 1726; Hill 413; Howes D44 (all describing the book form).
