Additional Details

Hawaii's Queen Lili'uokalani was overthrown in 1893, the United States formally annexed Hawaii in 1898, and the Hawaiian Organic Act was passed on 22 February 1900 to establish a territorial government. This photograph shows the crowd at 'Iolani Palace on 14 June which launched the new Territory of Hawaii. The majestically bearded Sanford Dole can be seen front and center on the podium; he had served as President of Hawaii since Lili'uokalani was deposed, and was this day inaugurated as the first territorial governor.
