Rev. Gulick had apparently published a shipping list for Ascension Island and Ponapi (not traced) in which "gross licentiousness of the whaling fleet at Ascension and other Micronesian islands was drawn in the deepest possible colors" (according to an article in the Polynesian of Honolulu dated 24 November 1860). The list apparently was based on faulty information and was ascribed to two whaling captains who had not even been to Ascension. Gulick here offers his apologizes to the two maligned captains, and closes with hopes that someday "an enlightened public opinion shall be brought to bear upon the deeds of those who from Christian lands visit the islands of the Pacific." Not in Forbes or OCLC, and apparently unrecorded.
