Additional Details

The author was a Hawaiian missionary from 1844 to 1848, then served as a Congregational minister in San Francisco. This history was originally written as a series of lectures, with an emphasis on missionary activities. Only 500 copies were printed. An early owner has noted in pencil on the front pastedown: "Said to be the first book ever published in San Francisco." This is not strictly true, but it is quite early. Printing in San Francisco began in 1846, but we find in Greenwood only one previous San Francisco imprint of greater length, the 261-page "Manual of . . . San Francisco" issued the previous year (404). Forbes 1946; Greenwood, California Imprints 388. Provenance: ABCFM member Edward C. Miles of Montclair, NJ (1871 inscription); Hawaiian historian William Drake Westervelt (1849-1939); his son Andrew Castle Westervelt (1906-1989).
