Additional Details

John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792) was a British statesman and naval officer. We owe the moniker of our modern hand-held cuisine to the Earl, and Captain Cook, who received ample military funding for his Pacific voyages at the behest of the Lord, originally branded the Hawaiian island group the Sandwich Islands in his honor. The present is a small collection of related items:

- J. Scott; after Thomas Gainsborough. John 4th Earl of Sandwich. Mezzotint and engraved portrait. 13¼x9 inches sheet size, wide margins; clean. London: Henry Graves, 1868.

- Alexander Jacob. Montagu. Earl of Sandwich. Hand-colored engraved plate the Montague family heraldic arms. 13¼x9 inches sheet size, wide margins. London, circa 1767.

- Captain Cook/Alexander Hogg. Chart of the Sandwich Isles... Accurately Engraved for Anderson's Large Folio Edition of the Whole of Capt. Cook's Voyages &c. 9x14 inches sheet size, ample margins; minor edge wear. London, circa 1790.
