Additional Details

Hegamin (1894-1970) was the second African American to make a record, cutting "Jazz Me Blues" only a few months after Mamie Smith's "Crazy Blues." Her signature piece was the legendary "He May Be Your Man." Some of the manuscript pieces here are for "The Wabash Blues," dated in hand 1922, and bearing Hegamin's name and key indications. The lot also includes two parts to an original piece by Hegamin and Spencer Williams, "Mississippi Blues;" two parts for "He May Be Your Man," and a complete manuscript for "Cold Cold Winter Blues" by Turk Robinson. Also included are pieces of printed music, several of them bearing Hegamin's ownership signature.<
