The text commemorates the sesquicentennial of the murder in 1837 of the Abolitionist minister and printer Elijah Parish Lovejoy by a mob that gathered in Alton, Illinois to destroy his press on which anti-slavery tracts were printed. Chandler reproduced excerpts from Lovejoy's Memoirs, a scarce book published in 1838, the year af the author's death.
