Additional Details

Robert Burford opened his panorama theatre in London's Leicester Square at the end of the 18th century. Over the years many panoramas were exhibited, showing curious places and events. The Burford panorama of Jerusalem was modeled on drawings by Frederick Catherwood (known for his studies of Chiapas and Yucatan). It was first exhibited in Leicester Square in 1835, and it seems reasonable that it travelled to the United States a few years later. Two pamphlets included here are souvenir keepsakes for the showing of the panorama in New York and again in Philadelphia - neither is dated, but both contain folding reproductions of the panorama.
The remaining pamphlet is a keepsake for the showing of two monumental paintings of Jerusalem by Selous (each 14x10 feet), in New York, possibly in the early 1870s.
