Hugo, prolific novelist and dramatist as well as the 19th-century's greatest French poet, was also an accomplished painter. This collection of his art was compiled by Raymond Escholier, conservator of Hugo's home. ex-collection monroe wheeler with a gift inscription from glenway wescott and Wheeler's book label on front pastedown. As well as a major figure in the modern art world, Wheeler was former Director of Exhibitions and Publications at the Museum of Modern Art. A fine association copy of a scarce work.
