Additional Details

McMurtrie originally called this rare sermon "the first work of a literary character printed in Chicago" (Books and Pamphlets Printed in Chicago 1835-1850, 12), preceded only by corporate and legal documents. His later edition renders it probably the second such work. Hallam came to Chicago as an Episcopal missionary in 1834, and delivered this sermon at the frontier settlement's first Episcopal Church lass than two years after it opened. His sermon was published at the request of townsmen including former mayor John Kinzie; their letter and Hallam's response are published on page 3.

Byrd 452; McMurtrie 23. 2 in OCLC (Lincoln Library, Newberry); not in Sabin or Shaw & Shoemaker. One other traced at auction, sold in the Mary Ann Dicke sale by Hanzel Galleries in Chicago, 9 March 1975, for $1050.
