Additional Details

The entries begin in 1839 with Whittier's "first effort," at Brother Eben Tilton's home in Deerfield, NH, and continue for 9 pages in New Hampshire. In 1842 he moves to Illinois, and records sermons preached in the area west of Chicago in Warrenville, Batavia, Bloomingdale, Blackberry, Ohio Grove, and Union Grove, Il. The entries generally give the date of the sermon, the scriptural passage, and the home or school where it was delivered, sometimes including a more personal detail such as "Preached the funeral sermon of Luther Seavey's child at Blackberry." The sermon entries end in 1846, and resume with 7 pages of sermons in Spring Prairie (Illinois?) from 1853 to 1854. Toward the rear of the volume are a few pages of weddings performed in Illinois from 1845 to 1854 (with stray entries from 1862 and 1874) and baptisms performed from 1843 to 1853.
