Additional Details

Biography of a Massachusetts Baptist missionary who went to southern Illinois in 1831 and died there in 1833; extracts from his diary and correspondence comprise much of the book. He includes an account of very early Mormon efforts in Schuyler County, IL (pages 210-211), including a Methodist preacher who converted and then apparently went insane, destroying most of his personal property: "His conduct . . . blasted the hopes of Mormonism in this region for a season." Buck 232; Flake 8482; Howes W692; Hubach, Travel Narratives page 70; Sabin 105571. No copies traced at auction since 1899.
