Additional Details

Abbey (Travel II, 432) refers us to Sutton, No. 13 (A), for this edition of Oriental Scenery. There Sutton records an example with a general title and bound as a single volume (as the present example). Abbey suggests that this edition may have been published at a later date (circa 1841) by Bohn: "Further investigation of all these points is needed, however, especially to settle whether the Published by the Authors, MDCCCXVI (Sutton, No. 13 (A)) copies are remainders or not, and, if not, which form of the book was remaindered by Bohn." Current thinking holds that this presentation indeed constitutes the 1841 reissue, although it is unclear whether the illustrations were restruck from the original plates or if they were simply remainders of the original 1812-16 publication. The issue is further complicated by the fact that some copies have the 8 plans, while others do not.
