Additional Details

William H.H. Plummer (1841-1877) and his wife Lucinda Jones (1843-1918) moved from upstate New York to Evansville, IN in 1868, where he attended business college and worked as a book-keeper, and she taught school. They wrote these charming letters to brother Lyman J. "Jim" Plummer and his wife Adelaide (see also lots 182 and 187). On 21 October 1868, Lucinda wrote to her sister-in-law "We are much pleased with Evansville, it being situated on the Ohio, where there are plenty of Rebels to contend with and torchlight processions to see and political excitement generally." William had suffered a serious leg injury at Second Bull Run with the 94th New York Regiment, an injury discussed in his 18 October 1868 letter; complications led to his death in 1877.
