19TH CENTURY OIL PORTRAIT OF OSCEOLA (INDIANS.) Catlin, George; after. Portrait of the Seminole Chief Osceola. Additional Details

Catlin met with Osceola shortly before the Indian Chief's death in January 1838 at Ft. Moultrie, recounting their meeting in detail in his work Letters and Notes. His portrait is considered unusual due in part to the uncharacteristic ornamentation worn by Osceola. See John M. Goggin's article "Osceola: Portraits, Features, and Dress" in Florida Historical Quarterly, vol. 33, Jan.-April, 1955. The original painting by Catlin is located at the Smithsonian. <
