Additional Details

A manuscript summary of the laws relating to the reducciones, where Indians were forced to concentrate for ease of taxation and assimilation. Includes chapters titled "Sobre el tratamiento de los Indios," "Servicio personal," "Privilegios de sus causas," and "Sobre criminalidades" in the first section, followed by a section in a different hand with chapters titled "Sobre servicio de Indios," "De los privilegios que gozan los Indios por razón de miserables," "Sobre el modo de proceder contra los indios," and "Otros privilegios de los Indios." The many dozens of laws sketch the legal parameters of Indian life under Spain: the requirement of fixed addresses, the ban on white and black residents in the reducciones, bans on polygamy and wine, whippings for those who move to another settlement without permission, and more. Many of the points are accompanied with a reference to the full law in Recopilacion de Leyes de los Reynos de Indias, first published in 1681, or to Solorzano's Politica Indiana, first published in 1648. The original compilers are unknown, but presumably were colonial officials who needed to perform their duties without ready access to the Recopilacion.
