Additional Details

Seminal document in the history of the relations between the I.M.M. and the United States. This session marked the first in what would be many more confrontations between the two, with the following acts in the drama taking place in Wasington, D. C.
The government had for years been concerned with the vast and monopolistic holdings of the I.M.M., particularly after it began acquiring numerous British lines and then continental ones as well. The exchanges between Albert Lasker (for the Shipping Board) and P. Franklin (for the I.M.M.) are insightful. In testimony, Franklin gives as clear a history of the evolution of the company and its holdings as one could imagine. A fascinating read!
