Additional Details

Patrick O'Donnell (1835-1883) was executed in 1883 for his assassination of Irish Republican turncoat Thomas Carey. O'Donnell had lived for years in Pennsylvania, where he had ties to the Molly Maguires, and had American citizenship. He was regarded by many Irish-Americans as a hero, and President Arthur was pressured to request clemency in the case from the British government. This portrait depicts O'Donnell under crossed Irish and American flags. with--the scarce pamphlet "The Life, Trial and Execution of O'Donnell, the Irish Martyr," in original illustrated wrappers, but lacking the title page.
