Hear Minister Malcolm. . . 'Which Way for the Negro, Integration or Separation, as Taught to Him by Elijah Muhammad.' Malcolm X had, by the time of this lecture, risen through the hierarchy of the Nation of Islam to a position second only to Elijah Muhammad himself. He was beginning to have some qualms about the concept of absolute separatism. Malcolm X had already visited the United Arab Republic, Sudan, Nigeria, and Ghana in 1959 to make arrangements for a tour of Africa by Elijah Muhammad. When he himself toured the Middle East a part of his 'Hadj,' he wrote about the variation in race, color and character of Islam. A year after this lecture, in February of 1964, his break with the NOI was complete.
