The twin-screw ship began her maiden voyage from Genoa to New York on 14 January 1953. On 25 July 1956 she collided with the Swedish American liner "Stockholm." A total of 54 lives were lost between the two ships and the "Andrea Doria" sank the following day. Her sister ship was the "Cristoforo Colombo."
