With these two ships the Italian Line tried to keep itslef afloat and in competition with the airline industry. It was a noble attempt which ultimately failed. Both ships had their maiden voyages within four months of each other in 1965. "Raffaello" was bombed in Iraq in 1983 and sank. "Michelangelo" was scrapped in Pakistan in 1981.
