(JACKSON, ANDREW.) The Decapitation of a Great Blockhead by the Mysterious Agency of the Claret Coloured Coat. Hand-colored lithograph, 13 3/4x19 3/4 inches; moderate foxing and soiling, vertical fold. [Boston?, 1834?]

Additional Details

In 1834, the mighty USS Constitution was fitted with a new figurehead depicting Andrew Jackson. By this time, his popularity was sinking, particularly in New England. While the ship was docked in Boston on 2 July, a local sea captain rowed out to the Constitution during a heavy lightning storm and sawed off the offending figurehead. In this satirical print, the work is done by demons under the noses of negligent sentries. Reilly 1834-13.
