Additional Details

Sir William Alexander Clarke Bustamante (1884-1977) was a leading advocate for Jamaican independence, and served as the new nation's first Prime Minister from 1962 to 1967. These photographs depict events going back at least to Bustamante's activist days, with one bearing a 1942 date; most seem to depict the era of his presidency. A few depict other earlier Jamaica leaders. The photographs were apparently produced and compiled between 1974 and 1980 (perhaps in commemoration of his 1977 death), when the present Jamaican Information Service bore the title "Agency for Public Information."
