Additional Details

The James-Younger Gang's last attempted robbery was of a bank in Northfield, Minnesota. Two of the gang were killed on the scene, and the remainder dispersed, with one more killed before all but the James brothers were captured two weeks later. The haunting portraits in this composite were taken shortly after the crime, with bullet wounds visible on the chests of the three shirtless corpses, and two of the Younger brothers visibly wounded as well. Depicts James Younger, Cole Younger, Bob Younger in the top row; the corpses of Clell Miller, Charles Pitts, and Bill Chadwell in the second row; and Jesse James (spelled here "Jessee James"), [Joseph Lee] Haywood, and Frank James in the bottom row. Haywood was the bank cashier who died defending his deposits. "Sept 6, 1876" is penciled on verso, but this was the date of the initial shoot-out rather than the production date of the card. On 28 October 1876, the Mankato Record ran the following ad: "Ten robber pictures for one dollar at Everitt's."
