(JAPAN.) [U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry's arrival in Japan, July 8th, 1853]. Large woodblock kawaraban broadside on two sheets joined depicting the entrance of Perry's Black Ship squadron into Edo Bay. 14x22 1/4 inches sheet size, left and right margins narrow; minor weakening at folds. Japan, circa 1853

Additional Details

More of a close-up view of Perry's arrival than is commonly seen in contemporary kawaraban. Edo Bay is shown fortified with protections against foreign invasion. A listing of the Daimyo feudal lords entrusted with guarding the Shogun appears along with printed distances to America, England, Korea and several Dutch settlements.
