Additional Details

Ôtsuki was a scholar, painter, naturalist and book collector from an influential family specializing in Rangakusha, or Western learning. The Rokumotsu shinshi is an illustrated translation and annotation concerned with medicinal uses of six species, including narwhal, saffron, nutmeg, mummies, agaric, and mermaids. The illustration of the narwhal was made by J. Jonston and that of nutmeg by R. Dodoens.
