Album containing more than 35 Japanese cabinet cards and c-d-v's, comprising portraits of geishas, families, and actors, including 19 of geishas in formal studio settings dressed in traditional festive garb reading a book, holding an umbrella or fan, or elegantly interacting with other geisha; 5 images of families including a mother in a winter head wrap and her 3 boys in military caps, a father and his 3 boys with matching shaven heads, and an adorable young boy grasping a Japanese Imperial flag; 12 cartes-de-visite of portraits of actors in traditional samurai costume, dressed as geishas, or other traditional Kabuki garb, including 3 portraits of actor Ishikawa Danjuro. Printing-out paper and albumen prints, nearly all are on original mounts, some with printed captions, two with identification in kanji (traditional Japanese calligraphy) on verso. Thick 8vo, velvet ornamented with a stainless steel motif, worn. 1870s-80s
