This rich and diverse album contains market and street scenes, lush landscapes, temples, and most importantly individual and group portraits of its inhabitants, including wedding ceremonies, occupational scenes, clothing studies, Geishas, Christian workers and representants of the Taikyo Dendo movement, and more. Silver prints, the images measuring 3½x2⅛ to 8½x10⅞ inches (8.9x5.4 to 21.6x27.6 cm.), mounted recto/verso, some content loose, most images with captions in ink on mount or on a small paper label. Oblong 4to; the backstrip and front cover perished.
WITH--A group of 15 images depicting diverse street scenes and landscapes from Shimabara and Kyoto, but also cultural landmarks, such as The Yomeimon Gate, Nikko City, and group portraits. Albumen prints, most hand-colored, the images measuring approximately 8⅜x10⅞ inches (21.3x27.6 cm.), and slightly smaller, and the reverse, some with captions in the negative. Oblong 4to; content loose; the backstrip and front cover perished. 1890s.
