Exquisite album with 87 hand-colored photographs of scenes from Japan, including temples, landscapes, gardens, Tokyo, cherry blossoms, architecture, and occupational scenes with beautiful geishas, tradespeople, and wrestlers. Hand-colored albumen prints, each measuring approximately 7 3/4x10 1/2 inches (19.7x26.7 cm.), and the reverse, about 10 with a caption, in English, in the negative, and more with a number, also in the negative; with the original tissue guards, creased and torn (there are 7 blank boards at the rear). Oblong folio, beautiful black lacquer covers, the front with an unusual image of a man and a monkey with ivory and mother-of-pearl inlay and gilt highlights; leather backstrip; all edges gilt; in the original cloth box. 1890s
