Additional Details

Fascinating archive of contemporary reporting of an event which changed diplomatic and trade relations between the West and Japan. The manuscript chart depicts Perry's fleet of four "Black Ships" entering Edo Bay on July 8, 1853; the portrait subtly combines Eastern technique with the Western subject; much of the document material appears to relate to the first voyage, including mention of gifts presented to the Japanese from the Americans.
