Large two-sheet color kawaraban map and broadside announcing news of the Treaty of Amity & Commerce, also known as the Harris Treaty. The map depicts Japanese ports of Edo, Kyoto, Osaka and Shimoda with a portrait of Townsend Harris (the left of the two figures) appearing at the upper right with his translator. In 1858 Harris negotiated the treaty which ushered in the first era of American and European diplomacy and commerce with Japan.
