(JAPAN -- NAUTICAL.) Archive of 4 manuscript kawaraban and a group of contemporary manuscript reports on foreign ships and marine commerce. Japan, circa 1840's to 1850's

Additional Details

The four kawaraban drawings include: Commodore Perry's Black Ship, 11 1/2x16 inches (extensive worming, lined on verso); a Russian vessel, 10 1/2x14 1/2 inches; captured sailors of a whaling ship, 11x13 1/2 inches; and a nautical map, 10x13 inches.

The group of manuscript reports is dated 1855 and discusses the arrivals of the USS Vincennes and Hancock at Shimoda on May 13, 1855 - an event which tested the newly signed commercial treaty between the United States and Japan. Another report mentions the great Ansei earthquake of November 11, 1855 which many Japanese alleged was castigation for permitting foreigners into Japan for trading purposes.
