Additional Details

A fine set of the Ansei Treaties, the formal diplomatic engagements between Japan and the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia and the Netherlands which set into motion the opening of Japan's previously secluded ports to worldwide commercial trade and external residency. Each volume individually details the negotiations between Japan and the specific foreign powers. Serious western influence into Japan began with Commodore Matthew Perry's aggressive visits to the Shogunate in 1853 and 1854 and eventually culminated at the 1858 Convention of Kanagawa, arbitrated by the demanding Townsend Harris, and at which the signing of the first of these monumental treaties occurred. Similar accords with Britain, France, Russia and the Netherlands followed soon after, initiating a modern era of East-West foreign relations.
