Additional Details

Rare kawaraban newsbook announcing the arrival of Commodore Perry and the Black Ships to Japan in 1853. Three double-page illustrations as follows: a dominating portrait of Perry's flagship; Perry and a contingent of marines marching in procession to a meeting with local dignitaries at Kurihama. Two cabin boys can be seen carrying boxes, presumably official gifts or President Fillmore's letter requesting harmonious commerce; and a map of Edo Bay where the Black Ships entered. Listings of the Samurai and Daimyo Feudal Lords entrusted with the protection of Japan from foreign invasion are found on the final leaves.
