Album with 50 unusually exquisite photographs, including 30 expertly hand-colored scenes of Tokyo, Yokohama, Inosima, Mt. Fuji, Yokoska, and more.
The large-format views capture essences of daily life as experienced by local inhabitants, alongside neatly composed images of historic locations, elaborate temples, bustling street scenes, and beautiful, expansive landscapes, many of which are accurately rendered with delicately applied hand-coloring. Approximately 20 of the photographs are attributed to Baron Raimund von Stillfried (1839-1911) and Hermann Andersen (active 1870s-80s). Albumen prints, the images measuring 9 1/2x12 inches (24.1x30.5 cm.), and slightly smaller, many with captions and/or inventory numbers in the negatives, and/or period captions, in ink, on mount rectos. Oblong folio, boards absent; backstrip perished. 1870s
