Nice, relating to the afternmath of the Johnstown Flood and subsequent damage down river in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. With scenes of the town under water (including a building with commercial signage for Nice's studio), citizens in rowboats navigating the streets, men in derby hats surveying the damage, clean-up campaigns, and bird's-eye views of the swollen river. Cabinet card mounts with albumen prints measuring 4x6 1/4 inches (10.2x15.9 cm.), each with a printed numeric label affixed to recto and 6 with captions and/or dates in the negative; 3 with Nice's printed credit on mount recto and 8 with his cartouche on mount verso; 11 with remnants of newsprint on mount verso. 1889
The Johnstown Flood ("The Great Flood of 1889") was caused by a combination of factors, including the failure of the South Fork Dam (14 miles upstream of Johnstown) and extremely heavy rainfall. The dam's collapse resulted in more than 2200 deaths and catastrophic damage. This was the first disaster relief effort handled by the new American Red Cross, which was led by Clara Barton.
