As the First Great Awakening wound down, Edwards observed acidly that "all remarkable "Revivals of Religion . . . soon followed with a great Increase of Stupidity, corrupt Principles, a profane and atheistical Spirit, and the Triumph of the open Enemies of Religion" (page ii). Stephen Gano (1762-1828), who succeeded Manning as pastor of Providence's First Baptist Church in America; Gano's son-in-law, the Rev.
