As the First Great Awakening wound down, Edwards observed acidly that "all remarkable "Revivals of Religion . . . soon followed with a great Increase of Stupidity, corrupt Principles, a profane and atheistical Spirit, and the Triumph of the open Enemies of Religion" (page ii).
