(JOYCE, JAMES.) ABBOTT, BERENICE. Three portraits of the Joyce family. 3 silver prints (14x11 inches each), matted and framed triptych. Depicts James, Nora and Lucia Joyce seated. Each photo signed in pencil by Abbott, and with her New York City hand stamp to verso. Abbott traveled in the early 1920s to Paris where she assisted Man Ray in his portrait studio. Soon after, she set up her own studio, shooting cultural and artistic luminaries, including several studies of Joyce. Each 8x10 inch silver print is mounted to the original 14x11 inch mounts, with Abbott's signature in pencil, on mount recto. The mounts appear to have been trimmed slightly at the edges. Each photograph exhibits tiny areas of scattered professional retouching which is mainly discernible when closely examining the print surface and is most noticeable at central right in the image of Nora. There are also disparate areas of minor discoloration throughout the images. These display as small patches of warmer tones scattered in an inconsistent way throughout the photographs. [c. late 1920s; printed c. 1970]
