first edition. eric gill's copy, inscribed to him by his brother evan and dated February 22, 1931. Considered by Joyce scholar Richard Ellmann to be the "first apologia" for Finnegans Wake. It prints 12 studies by contemporary writers dealing with Joyce's linguistic innovations in the work. The section by Beckett is considered his first appearance in print.
